When Sam Matutoane was unable to find a retailer in South Africa willing to sell his work, we decided to take his clever, quirky products to market ourselves. So here we are - bringing you his and so many other wonderful products made right here on the African Continent.
Mary Githu brings with her a wealth of talent and has a unique affinity for all things handcrafted in Africa. Originally from Kenya, she started off in craft markets around Johannesburg. Soon her savvy business acumen and sharp sales skills enabled her to venture into entertainment and cosmetic marketing for leading international brands like L'Oreal and Ster Kinekor.
Our search for new treasures and exciting artists lead us on a wonderful journey of discovery. We traveled from the wet damp streets of Diepsloot (on the day we visited, at least) to the vibrant energy of Maboneng in downtown Johannesburg and the ever so genteel Rosebank Craft Market. Along this journey we met some of the most creative and ambitious artists from all over the continent.
Buy a beautiful ceramic bowl from Bentley van Wyk who hails from the windy City of Port Elizabeth. Take home a handcrafted doll made by Soweto’s own Shweshwe Poppi's for your little one. If you lust after leather goods, have a look at the Wek Space who partnered with us in selling their leather and exotic hand-stitched bags & weekenders.
All these artists converging at the Southernmost tip of Africa hoping to create something beautiful, something special, something desirable and uniquely African.
So, welcome to our little slice of paradise, where we showcase beautiful contemporary African design.
